Interview with the with Maca Rodríguez, Golf Director of Golf del Sur, the official golf course of the 2024 World Final
As the 2024 International Pairs World Final approaches, we are thrilled to highlight Golf del Sur, the official golf course for this prestigious event and the Ryder Experience. Located in the picturesque landscape of Tenerife, Golf del Sur offers an exceptional golfing experience with its challenging courses and stunning views. We had the opportunity to sit down with Maca Rodríguez, the Director of Golf del Sur, to gain insight into what makes this course a top destination for golfers worldwide and how it contributes to Tenerife’s appeal as a premier golf destination. Below are the highlights of our insightful conversation.
- Can you tell us a bit about the history of Golf del Sur and its significance in the golfing world?
Golf del Sur was established in 1987 as the first tourist golf course in Tenerife. It marked the beginning of a new era, offering an alternative to the traditional sun and beach tourism in the southern part of the island. Despite being nearly 37 years old, Golf del Sur was a pioneer in sustainable golf course design, implementing water treatment for the entire development and reusing it for irrigation, setting a standard for environmentally conscious golf courses
- What sets Golf del Sur apart from other golf courses in Tenerife?
What makes Golf del Sur truly unique is its challenging and thought-provoking design. Every hole requires strategic thinking, with stunning views of Teide and the sea enhancing the experience. The 18 holes are a true test for players, with the added challenge of the trade winds acting as a natural handicap.
- How does Golf del Sur cater to players of different levels, especially during an important event like the International Pairs World Final?
Golf del Sur is designed to be entertaining and accessible to players of all skill levels. Even with the course’s slopes, it allows players of lower handicaps to compete and enjoy the game, making it an ideal venue for events like the International Pairs World Final.
4. Can you describe some of the most challenging and unique holes on the course that participants can expect?
Certainly. Take Hole 4, for instance. It appears to be a simple hole at first, but as you approach for your second or third shot, you’ll find the green flanked by a lake, adding a layer of complexity. Then there’s Hole 13, an uphill par 4 that seems short, but requires precise driving. If not careful, your ball could end up in a spectacular natural ravine.
5. What efforts are made to maintain the pristine condition of the course and ensure it meets international standards
At Golf del Sur, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of play. Over the years, we’ve invested in significant upgrades, including a major bunker remodel in 2023. Currently, we’re focused on redefining our fairways and roughs, improving buggy paths, and investing in advanced machinery to keep the course in impeccable condition.
- How does Golf del Sur integrate the natural beauty and landscape of Tenerife into the golf experience?
Our course is beautifully integrated into Tenerife’s natural volcanic landscape. Notably, Holes 12 and 13 preserve the island’s native vegetation in the rough, allowing players to appreciate both the local flora and fauna as part of their golfing experience.
- What services and facilities can participants and guests expect to enjoy during their stay at Golf del Sur?
Golf del Sur offers a comprehensive range of services and facilities. Guests can enjoy our pro shop, reception area, on-course bathrooms, locker rooms, practice range, electric lithium buggies, manual and electric trolleys, café-restaurant, buggy bar, and the convenience of a taxi stand and bus stop.
- How does Golf del Sur contribute to tourism promotion in Tenerife, and what can visitors expect when exploring the island beyond the golf course?
Since its inception, Golf del Sur has been instrumental in establishing Tenerife as a premier golf destination. Located just 15 minutes from Tenerife South Airport, the course is near the sea in a tranquil setting. Visitors can expect exceptional service from our dedicated staff, who are truly our greatest asset, and can explore the diverse offerings of Tenerife beyond the course.
- Lastly, Manuel Piñero will lead one of the Ryder Experience teams at Golf del Sur, the same course he helped remodel. What impact and changes has he brought to the course?
Manuel Piñero has been a driving force behind the continuous improvements at Golf del Sur since 2004. Every change made to the course, from the recent bunker renovations to the remodeling of greens and hole redesigns, has been under his guidance. Currently, we’re working on a Master Plan to enhance the course further, which includes introducing new grasses, readapting certain holes, updating the irrigation system, and making Golf del Sur more sustainable overall.
