Unforgettable Moments at the 2024 International Pairs World Final in Tenerife
The highly anticipated 2024 International Pairs World Final concluded on 4 October, capping off an exhilarating week of world-class golf at the stunning Golf del Sur. Competitors from around the globe came together to battle for top honors, enjoying unforgettable moments of camaraderie and fierce competition against the backdrop of Tenerife’s breathtaking scenery.
This year’s International Pairs World Final continued to grow in global reach, with over 23 countries represented at the 2024 World Final in Tenerife. We were thrilled to welcome Brazil, Mexico, Singapore, and Japan for their first year in the tournament. Their participation marks an exciting milestone for the event, further solidifying its status as one of the most internationally diverse amateur golf competitions. The presence of these new countries added even more excitement and cultural exchange to an already vibrant week of golf and camaraderie.
Arrival and Ryder Experience Kick-Off
The event kicked off on 30 September with participants arriving at Hotel Barceló, setting the stage for the week ahead with a welcome cocktail function at the hotel’s elegant Royal Level. Guests were treated to the much-anticipated Ryder Experience Team Announcements, generating buzz and excitement for the days to come.
The following day, 1 October, golfers hit the course for a practice round at Golf del Sur, familiarizing themselves with the challenging layout of the tournament venue. The day concluded with the official International Pairs Flag Raising Ceremony, followed by the prestigious Ryder Captains’ Dinner. The evening was filled with stories and insights shared by Ryder Cup legends Manuel Piñero, Costantino Rocca, and Eddie Polland, offering players a rare glimpse into their iconic careers.
Official Round 1
Official Tournament Round 1 commenced on 2 October, with participants competing in their respective divisions. In the Open Championship, Miguel Heliodoro and Vitor António from Portugal emerged as early leaders, scoring 46 points. Hot on their heels were Jonathan Duggan and Michael Walsh from the UAE with 44 points, while Devan Govender and Kris Venketas from South Africa rounded out the top three with 43 points.
The Women’s Championship saw an impressive debut performance by Catherine Kwek and Maggie Koh from Singapore, who led with a dominant 46 points, a stunning 11-shot lead over the rest of the field.
In the Mixed Pairs Division, Gorrety Mutai and Kimeli Mutai from Kenya held the top spot with 42 points, closely followed by Mark & Belinda Barry from England and Antonio Jo & Nina Um from Singapore.
The Final Day and Champions Crowned
The pressure was on as players returned for Official Round 2 on 3 October. In the Championship, Miguel Heliodoro and Vitor António from Portugal held their nerve to emerge victorious, claiming the title with a two-round total of 89 points. Niklas Olsson and Viktor Olsson from Sweden finished as runners-up with 85 points.
In the Gross Division, Eddie Taylor and Odette Taylor from South Africa delivered a remarkable performance, securing the division title with an impressive 5 under par betterball strokeplay score. The Taylors also finished as runners-up in the Mixed Pairs Division. Italy’s Davide Crosta and Davide Palestro claimed 2nd place with a score of 2 under par.
In the Women’s Championship, Catherine Kwek and Maggie Koh maintained their lead, taking home the title in their debut year. Giulia Martinelli and Lorella Campi from Italy earned the runner-up spot after a strong showing.
The Mixed Pairs Division delivered a dramatic finish, with Gorrety Mutai and Kimeli Mutai from Kenya edging out Eddie Taylor and Odette Taylor by just 1 point to secure the win.
The week also included the exciting Ryder Experience, where Manuel Piñero’s team triumphed, thanks in part to his intimate knowledge of the Golf del Sur course, which he previously redesigned.
A Grand Celebration
The champions were celebrated in a grand closing ceremony that brought the event to a close, with participants and guests enjoying festivities that carried on well into the night. The 2024 International Pairs World Final will be remembered not only for its intense competition but also for the sense of unity and sportsmanship that it fostered.
